Does your church follow the ecumenical calendar? Most denominations would know it by that name however the Roman Catholic Church might call it the liturgical calendar. It follows seasons and holidays with time off for good behavior from June through October. Thanksgiving, Advent, Christmas, Lent, Palm Sunday, Easter Sunday, and Pentecost are all in its shadow. I once asked a pastor during Advent that if the Holy Spirit gave him a message to preach would he do it? He responded by saying he would do so after his Advent series. First Thessalonians 5 tells us not to quench the spirit Strangely enough, the ecumenical calendar fellows hurricane season almost day for day. You can even find The Minister’s Revenge on this calendar. It is when on Christmas the pastor says, I suppose I’ll see you all next Easter to his packed congregation and he can say the same thing on Easter. I belong to an independent Bible Church that would by no means Follow The ecumenical calendar. The Holy Spirit is not reigned in by that yearly calendar. The denominations and the Roman Catholic Church can have it.
Like the Mormons, the Catholics have plenty of extra biblical works including the Catechism, papal authority, tradition, and scavengers of history. Mormons and the Restored Church say they have apostolic authority as does the New Apostolic Reformation which claim theirs began anew in 2002.
Christian Science with Key to the SCRIPTURES backs up the Bible for those of the Christian Science Faith. Cults all seem to need something plus the Bible. My church uses the Bible alone. For example, examine the scavenger of history Catholics. Their Faith didn’t begin whole in the first century but mine did. In fact the gospel was only in the mind of Jesus until He revealed it to Paul by way of Revelation. In truth, the Apostle Paul began the church movement not Peter. Peter received the keys to stand outside the gates of heaven. Did he ever get in?
The Catholics claim to be the oldest church so if they like numbers Paul wrote 13 books to the 2 books that Peter wrote. Who had the pen of a ready writer? Maybe the Catholics ought to be studying Paul more than Peter and the four verses Mary spoke?
I was once talking with a pastor friend about the holidays. He was telling me about his great Christmas sermon he was going to be giving. I broke in saying, what if the Holy Spirit inspired you to provide a different message that day? His response was surprising. He told me that he would put it on the following week for sure. In other words, his message would supersede that of the Holy Spirit’s message. He was about to quench the Holy Spirit. The ecumenical calendar of today No Doubt quenches a lot of what the Holy Spirit has to say. The pastor has to follow that calendar usually according to his denominational standards. Each year we go from Thanksgiving to Pentecost with pre-planned messages. The only time for the Holy Spirit is during the summer months when most people aren’t at church anyway. The Holy Spirit is asked to take a back seat in these congregations. I know that to be true because once during Advent I was going to give a message as a guest preacher not on Advent. I told the Elders of the church that and they suggested another guest pastor because my sermon would have been on a Holy Spirit chosen topic. I once went to a church nearby with a pre-planned message that I had done a lot of research on that week. Just before I was about to speak the Holy Spirit gave me something else to say and I did not quench the spirit. And my mouth almost moved word for word for what the Spirit wanted me to say. I love how the Spirit operates comparing spiritual things with spiritual. My prayer for our country would be to abandon The ecumenical calendar and allow the Holy Spirit free access in the pulpit. If we live in the spirit let us also walk in the spirit.
But has our precious Republic been forever altered into a democracy? Donald Trump talks about draining the swamp in Washington but is the swamp what is known as a democracy? How do we get it back into a republic?
Are we feeding the very essence of the word democracy as a people? Is it we the people or we the government? I think the latter Rings true. And this government is getting fatter by the day as our national debt is staggering to say the least. In truth I don’t think we’ll ever see a republic again. Individual rights are being suppressed in favor of a democracy. Those we elect to represent us are swayed by private interest groups. Only just recently many democratic newcomers will be moving into the House of Representative having made promises to their constituents about making bipartisan progress yet even before being sworn in these new Representatives are already being maneuvered out of their Promises to the their constituents. Such is what happens in Washington DC. We the people is Fading Into the background of the DC swamp. Personal integrity is being bought and Promises to those that voted them in broken. It is such a sad State of Affairs. The DC swamp wins again.
