Tongues in Church Today

Without an interpreter? Is that required? Most tongue speaking today is for show, is gibberish, and done by women with no interpreter. Without an interpreter, tongues are not to used. The church is not edified God is not the author of confusion so please let everything be done decently and in order. Praise the Lord!

  1. The Charismatic Praise and Prayer group that my wife and I belonged to was composed of about 50/50 Protestants and Catholics and was led by a very committed Christian. But there was one teaching that he insisted upon that I could not go along with. That was that you did not have the Baptism of the Holy Spirit if you did not speak in tongues. So, me being me, I stood up and read from Corinthians where it describes speaking in tongues as ONE OF the many possible gifts of the Holy Spirit. And that..”He who prophesies is greater than he who speaks in tongues.” (1 Cor.14:5) Our leader said..”Kent, At Pentecost, Peter, filled with the Holy Spirit, spoke in tongues!” I sassed him back saying..”Yes he did speak in tongues. But all of the people all from different countries, speaking different languages who heard Peter, UNDERSTOOD what he was saying!! He then asked me..”Kent. Don’t you want to speak in tongues?” I answered..”I would rather speak five words with my mind, in order to instruct others, then ten thousand words in a tongue.” (1 Cor.14:19)
I must add that in the years we were in that group I heard some fake “speaking in tongues.” But, sometimes, I also heard real speaking in group prayer. I would then close eyes and my mouth and just listen. It was so beautiful. It was

    1. Wow! They hit you with Peter! That must have hurt. It is the Holy Spirit that gives us our gifts fro 1Corinthians 12:11. Do all speak with tongues? Do they always interpret their tongues? 1Corinthians says tongues will cease.

      1. Yes tongues..will..cease. That does not mean that the gift of tongues does not exist today! And the BIBLE says about the Apostles (including Peter) speaking in tongues.. “And there appeared tongues of fire, distributed and resting on each one of them..They were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in tongues.. And there were there devout men from all nations.. And they were bewildered because each one heard them speaking in his own language” And all were amazed and perplexed, saying to one another, “What does this mean? They are filled with new wine!” “But PETER standing with the eleven, lifted up his voice and addressed them, “Men of Judea and all who live in Jerusalem..These men are not drunk..but this is what was spoken of by the prophet Joel: “And in the last days it shall be, God declares, that I will pour out my Spirit upon all flesh..and I shall show wonders in the heavens..And it shall be that whoever calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved,”
PETER then berates them saying, This crucified..but God raised Him up.. “Now when they heard this they were cut to the heart and said to Peter and the REST of the Apostles, “Brothers what shall we do?” And Peter said to them, “Repent and be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ..” What is wrong with this picture Dave? You have Jesus rebuking Peter and not forgiving him..and yet, after Jesus had ascended into Heaven, God fills Peter with His holy Spirit?? And Peter is “numbered among the Eleven?

      2. Who was Peter speaking to in Acts 2? Jews Baptized in the name of Jesus. Is that what the Catholics do? That is what Oneness Pentecostals do. My church baptizes in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit.
